The Fashion Industry, the Climate Crisis & the Search for Beauty

Beyond the Surface began with a tension: how could an industry built around beauty be entangled with systems of exploitation, waste and disconnection?
Using fashion as a lens, the talk explores a broader question: what if beauty is not simply something we see at the end of a process, but something revealed by the coherence of the process itself?
A question that kept getting bigger
My relationship with fashion began with a love of form, material and expression. Working inside the industry eventually forced me to look beyond the garment itself: to the people who made it, the resources it required, the systems it travelled through and what happened when its useful life ended.
What began as a question about sustainable fashion became a much larger exploration of beauty, responsibility and the systems we choose to build.
Drawing from my work in circular materials, community-building and the Bahá’í teachings, Beyond the Surface asks what changes when principles such as oneness, stewardship and the harmony of science and religion are treated not simply as ideals, but as design principles.
01 / BEAUTY IS A PROCESS
A beautiful end product cannot be separated from how it came to be. Who participated? What relationships made it possible? What was extracted, regenerated or left behind?
Beauty becomes deeper when we begin to see coherence, justice and integrity as part of its form.
02 / ONENESS IS A SYSTEMS PRINCIPLE
Our systems often behave as though people, resources and consequences are separate simply because distance makes those relationships harder to see.
They aren't.
Interdependence is already the reality. The question is whether the systems we design reflect it.
03 / INNOVATION NEEDS DIRECTION
Technical progress gives us extraordinary new capabilities. It cannot, by itself, tell us what those capabilities should be used for.
The harmony of science and religion offers another starting point: rigorous inquiry oriented toward the needs and flourishing of society.
The question is not only “what can we build?” but “what is worth building, and why?”
04 / SYSTEMS CHANGE IS ALSO HUMAN CHANGE
Better technology, incentives and institutions matter. But systems are ultimately sustained by people: by what we value, what we desire and what we are willing to prioritize when those values become inconvenient.
Transformation therefore happens in two directions at once: within people and through the structures people collectively build.
What we long for is what we end up building.
Beyond the Surface has continued to evolve through talks, workshops and conversations with audiences across business, sustainability, fashion and community spaces.
Each iteration starts from the same underlying question: how might the systems we build become more faithful to the relationships that already connect us?
